Discuss issues with distributive justice

Problem: Savior siblings are children conceived for the premise to use their stem cells or other tissues to save a sick sibling. This is often done with the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosing (PGD), HLA typing and in vitro fertilization (IVF) (Kuek et al., 2021). Children should not be conceived and used for treatment for another person. There are potential negative impacts and ethical violations of the savior sibling that must be considered. Procedures such as bone marrow transplants or organ donations are physically invasive and painful, require significant recovery time, and do not allow for informed consent or autonomy of the child (Althorpe & Finneron-Burns, 2023). The World Health Organization states "No cells, tissues, or organs should be removed from the body of a living minor for the purpose of transplantation other than in narrow exceptions allowed under national law. Specific measures should be in place to protect the minor, and wherever possible the minor's assent should be obtained before donation" (Zuniga-Fajuri, 2020. p. 230). There may be psychological harm if the child discovers the reason for their conception or if they are unable to save their sibling (Althorpe & Finneron-Burns, 2023). They may also experience psychological harm if they are treated differently by the parents; as if they are not wanted, are a burden, or as if their only purpose is to save their sibling (Althorpe & Finneron-Burns, 2023). Furthermore, Keuk et al. (2021) also discusses issues with distributive justice as the cost of PGD and IVF is costly and limited and only available to the wealthy.
