Discuss interview provided me with a little insight

Assignment task: Do a discussion post response for

My take away is probably a little different than most. The person I interviewed was not my first choice, not even my second choice. She was actually my last resort. She is not my favorite co-worker. This is for a couple of reasons. When she applied and interviewed for her "preceptor" position, I was applying for the exact same position. She had more experience in home care and knows the field as well as some of the employees including the director and one of the managers. I had more experience with teaching and a more well-rounded education plus had already earned my CNEn. I have up the preceptor position because I knew I needed to learn the field first, and would need a few months before I could really teach it well, but with the promise of putting me in that position as soon as I was ready. She stepped into the role and was immediately disliked by the new employees getting trained by her due to her authoritarian style of teaching (Topnursing, 2023). L.B. does not seem to take into consideration the various learning styles of the new hires, (Mangold et al., 2018), or their background in nursing. The new hires were quitting before they could get trained because she comes off as condescending. I can say thing because she came to me wanting to train me at my job that I had already been doing for several months, and again when I began precepting, to which I had already had more experience and better results doing. Therefore, she comes off as a know it all with authority, and during the interview, stated she had no more authority than any other field clinician (L. Borngesser, personal communications, Nov. 7, 2023).  So, L.B.  still has her role, but does other things while I am training many of the new hires and they stay with the company longer after my mentoring.

The interview provided me with a little insight into who she is, and while she is still condescending and tries to teach me my job, I have gained a little respect for her and can tolerate her as a colleague. I usually have to remind her that I also have a MSN in NE, and that I also have my CNEn, and she tends to back off the conversation, still not understanding why new hires do not stay after a week of training with her.

Basically, for my practice, I will make sure never to let her train the people that need to remain with the company, and never use an authoritarian style of teaching or be condescending to other professionals. I prefer a more transformational and servant style (Joel, 2022) of teaching methods which is to do what they need me to do and teach by example to have new hires do the methods the way the company needs them done.
