Problem
a) 1619, Anthony Johnson in Jamestown, Virginia and the emergence of "race based" slavery (European origin population coming to equate "Black" with "enslavable"). Very important!
b) Sierra Leone and the complexities of Africa, especially along the African coast (the Temne people for example) in the development of the African slave trade.
c) Discuss how Europeans changed the equation as they come to rely on enslaved Africans ("race" as a new marker of "who's enslavable") for their American plantations.
