Discuss freuds psychosexual stage theory

Assignment task: Give positive feedback about the following post in the AVID 3-2-1 method, explained below:

A 3-2-1 prompt helps students structure their responses to a text, film, or lesson by asking them to describe three takeaways, two questions, and one thing they enjoyed.

The original question for this post was: Discuss which of the five theorists below you can relate to in your life as an adult (or will in the future) and why. Or, you may discuss which of those theorists you like the most and why.

  • Freud's psychosexual stage theory
  • Erikson's psychosocial stage theory
  • Kohlberg's moral understanding stage theory
  • Piaget's cognitive development stage theory
  • Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory

POST:

There isn't a particular theorist that I would say I "relate" to in my life, but I must say i like the 8 stages of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory. in my personal opinion, his theory is pretty easy to understand, its not so difficult. Like Freud and many others, Erikson theorized that personality develops in a predetermined order, and builds upon each stage. For example, in the first stage; trust vs mistrust, Erikson states that from the point of birth to about 18 months babies are trying to decide whether to trust or mistrust their guardian depending on how they are treated. Now, I don't have any kids of my own, but definitely have a baby nephew! At one point, around him being 11 months I would babysit him for about an hour or two every morning, and I think he got pretty used and comfortable because he would never cry when my sister would leave him with me. Even though we would spend little time together, I would make sure to give him warmth ( we took many naps!), his food and snacks, and also cuddles! Because of this "love" that this baby is being shown, he is learning to trust those that are with him all the time. In this case, for his first stage, we can say that he succeeded in learning to trust, while some other children whose needs aren't met will start look at the world with fear, anxiety, and mistrust.

According to this theory, during each stage of the development, there is a "conflict" that we face and need to resolve. A good completion of each stage results in a healthy personality growth, while a failure to complete further stages may result in an unhealthy (and unhappy) sense of self. Simple as that! In every stage, It's either one choice or the other!
