Discuss fermentation of glucose to ethanol

Problem:

Two-stage chemostat system is used for fermentation of glucose to ethanol using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The feed flow rate and glucose concentrations are 1 l/h and S0 = 40g/l respectively. The following kinetic constants are known: td = 5h,Ks = 1g/l , YX/S = 0.1gX/gS, YP/S = 0.5g EtOH/g glucose. Assuming 80% conversion in every reactor, determine the following:

a. Substrate and product concentrations in the effluent of reactors

b. Biomass concentrations in both reactors

c. Volume of each reactor

d. Productivity of biomass (DX) and product (DP) for each reactor

e. Specific rates of product formation and substrate consumption for each reactor
