In this week's assigned reading, you learned about the different kinds of mental health professionals. Although there is some overlap in the training of the many different professionals in the social service fields, there are also specific differences related to the scope and practice of each profession. For example, most individuals who call themselves counselors have a master's or doctoral degree in counseling and may serve as addiction counselors, career counselors, clinical mental health counselors, college counselors, couple and family counselors, pastoral counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and school counselors. Depending on the counselor's specialization area and interests, they can be found at a vast array of different agencies doing individual, group, and couples and family counseling; administering and interpreting educational and psychological assessments; offering career counseling; consulting on a broad range of educational and psychological matters; and presenting developmentally appropriate activities for individuals. Most counselors pursue licensure or certification in their specialization area to practice therapy independently and attain third-party payments through insurance providers.
To help build your competency in understanding the requirements and duties of other helping professions, you will write an initial post on one of the following related mental health professions: Creative and Expressive Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, and Social Workers. Your initial discussion post should describe and discuss responsibilities or duties, education for entry-level and advanced work, licensure and credentialing requirements, professional associations, standards and competencies, and typical work settings.
