The Biden-Harris administration has announced a program in the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy that changes the process that aids in keeping American families together by allowing noncitizen spouses and children to apply for lawful permanent residence. This policy could protect the half a million eligible spouses of U.S. citizens and 50,000 noncitizen children under age 21 whose parents are married to a U.S. citizen. The externality benefits this addresses is those who have lived in the U.S. for 10 or more years who have been paying taxes and contributing to their communities as part of our growing economy by expanding lawful pathways to keeping families together, providing social benefits to all parties affected.
This DACA policy that President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established which allowed young immigrants to contribute to the country in a significant way opens a gateway for them to build successful careers and families of their own. The new program allows these individuals who have been using this path to receive work visas more quickly which will in turn provide a social rate of return to our country.
One of the most significant points I took away from this chapter is the costs of how companies and businesses affect others. I remember the Keystone XL pipeline in the news from the side of environmentalists because the government is quick to say "yes" to things that make the U.S. money with little to no regard to spillover. I personally am partial to the latest environmental policies in hopes to create a cleaner future for my country and my kids when they mean to reduce pollution. Pollution charges should also be heavier so consumers can be enlightened more of what they support when making decisions. This would allow newer, greener markets to provide public goods and to begin to take root and grow against their cheaper, more experienced competitors
