Problem:
Each discipline has created a large number of concepts that constitute its technical jargon or terminology. Introductory disciplinary textbooks are excellent sources of concepts and their definitions. Though each discipline has its own specialized vocabulary, it is common to find that a concept in one discipline is also found in the vocabulary of another discipline, but with a somewhat different meaning. Most concepts used by disciplines are either phenomena (such as "culture") or involve changes in particular phenomena ("revolution") or relationships between phenomena ("globalization"). Concepts may also represent elements within a particular theory or method. Understanding the broad meaning of concepts can help us to understand different meanings of the same concept used by different disciplines, and to recognize how interdisciplinary researchers use concepts to create common ground.
