Discuss concept of intersectionality as present by kimberle

Problem 1: Each of the following topics is a research topic actually studied by sociologists. Pick one that interests you. Now, pretend that you were designing a study on one of these topics but that you also wanted to understand how structural factors in society influence the experience of a particular racial group with regard to one of these questions.

  • Parenting & teen sexuality in the U.S. and Netherlands
  • Parenting experiences of low-income urban fathers
  • Changes in U.S. courtship norms across time
  • How Americans define family
  • Changes in fertility over time

What topic did you choose and which racial group you will you be focusing on? Which if the research methods from Chapter 1 would you choose to study this topic and why did you choose this method? (For example, will you conduct ethnography? Interviews? etc. )

Problem 2: Now consider the concept of intersectionality as presented by Kimberle Crenshaw in The Urgency of Intersectionality or "What Is Intersectionality? All of Who I Am" by Roberta K. Timothy. In your own words, what is intersectionality?

Problem 3: Why might using an intersectional approach be important to your research project? How might using an intersectional approach change the questions you might ask about this topic, how you might study it or what might you learn about it?
