Assignment:
If you were to become an activist, what cause would you pursue? What methods would you use? How would you fund your movement?
The academic literature draws a distinction between two common methods:
1. Community organization is a conflict-based strategy where the organizer recruits members into a created community by appealing to their individual self-interests. This method is commonly attributed to Saul Alinsky.
2. Organizing community is a cohesion-based strategy where the organizer enters a pre-existing community and responds to the broad needs of the group. This method is commonly attributed to the suffragettes from the 1848-1920 women's rights movement.
3. Which method would work best to further the cause you have chosen?
You can read more about these strategies here: Stall, S. and Stoecker, R. Community Organizing or Organizing Community? Gender and the Crafts of Empowerment. Working Paper, rev. November 1997
