Problem: A proposed strategy to assist with the challenges accompanying the usage of Big Data is integrating a Nursing Informaticist. "The informatics competency helps nurses use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making at the point of care" (Glassman, 2017, pg. 45). The nursing informaticist can help collaborate with the multidisciplinary team that needs data to be stored, analyzed, and integrated into the organization to better patient outcomes. For example, in the organization I worked for, the trending data showed higher numbers of patients becoming septic than other organizations in the corporation. A NI created a multidisciplinary team, and this was investigated. The team concluded that the use of central lines and foleys was higher than that of other hospitals, and there was no well-defined protocol or educational material available for staff to maintain these invasive lines. Therefore, the team developed systems to alert staff of early warning that a patient might be becoming septic, educated staff on proper maintenance of these lines, and put protocols in place. The Big Data trends that followed these changes showed improvement in patient outcomes. Fewer patients were becoming septic, and fewer invasive line-related septic fatalities.
