The case study has been used by educators as an effective research and diagnostic method for many years. A case study can be an effective tool for not only identifying the academic strengths and weaknesses of ELLs, but also for identifying the social and familial factors involved in their learning. Case studies also assist the classroom teacher in individualizing instruction in their classroom and in planning their own professional development for instructional improvement.
