As we discussed in class, Los Angeles has historically been known as the "Gang Capital of the World." However, Chicago is beginning to assume this dubious recognition. There were 561 homicides in Chicago in 2018. However, this is significantly less than the 664 homicides in 2017 and 781 in 2016. This follows a national trend of reductions in homicides. Baltimore and Washington, D.C. are the only major cities which experienced homicide increases in 2018. While these numbers are encouraging, you have to consider that the cities of New York had 278 homicides in 2018 and Los Angeles had 278 homicides in 2018. Therefore, Chicago had more homicides in 2018 than New York and Los Angeles combined. With such numbers, Chicago has become the "poster-child" for senseless gang violence.
Based upon your review of the video, what are three things that stand out to you about the neighborhoods in Chicago?
Based upon what you have learned in other classes about crime causation, why do you believe Chicago has such an issue with gang violence?
