Differentiate between Gateways and Bridges.
A machine that connects a LAN to the Internet is termed as a gateway. The gateway machine is responsible for routing packets that are destined for a domain outside the local domain. Such machines are known as routers.
A bridge is a machine that transparently connects two segments of the LAN together. Such two segments have similar domain name and behave like if part of similar LAN. In our case, we join the Cape Town LAN and the Sutherland
LAN through a PC running the public domain software termed as PCBRIDGE. Likewise, a PC at Sutherland, running PCBRIDGE, links the Sutherland LAN to the Cape Town LAN. Such are soon to be replaced through CISCO bridges.
