Difference between leaders and managers

Management can be defined as getting work done through others. In other words, managers don't do the work themselves. Managers help others do their jobs better. Leadership, on the other hand, is the process of influencing others to achieve organizational goals.

As Prof. Warren Bennis has stated, "the primary difference between leaders and managers is that leaders are concerned with doing the right thing, while managers are concerned with doing things right."

Leaders focus on visions, missions, goals, and objective, while managers focus on items such as productivity and efficiency. It might be said that managers are concerned with the means to an end, or how to get things done. Leaders are concerned with the ends... what gets done.

What are your thoughts on the differences, if any, between a manager and a leader? Are they the same? Give us your thoughts on this. What would you rather be? Why?
