Assignment task: Real World Application - Ableism
Students will observe any public setting and look for accessibility accommodations for people with disabilities. These can include, but are not limited to:
- Wheelchair ramps
- Braille on sighs and directories
- Quiet rooms for overstimulation (sound, touch, etc.)
A brief response that's paragraph length for the setting of your choice making sure to address the following:
1. What accommodations did you see?
2. Did you see any services catered to less visible disabilities? If so, which ones? If not, why is this problematic?
3. How near or far are these services? Would people have to go out of their way to access them?
4. What suggestions would you make to improve accessibility for both visible and non-apparent disabilities?
This can be presented in paragraph form or bullet points
- How easy or difficult was it to find these accessibility accommodations?
- Were you surprised by how easy or difficult it was to find services?
- Have you known anyone or have had experiences with lack of accommodations? Explain these experiences and who you/the person was affected.
