Did the student have a first language other than english

Problem

In accordance with Florida Rule 6A-6.0902:

Each student shall be surveyed upon initial registration in a Florida public school. The Language Survey is included in the registration papers. The survey contains the following questions:

• Is a language other than English used in the home?
• Did the student have a first language other than English?
• Does the student most frequently speak a language other than English?

Each student who responded "Yes" to any question on the Language Survey will be assessed to determine if the student is limited English proficient. These students are coded "LP" on the district database.

Parents are allowed to refuse ESOL services, but schools are required to test students when there is a "Yes" on the language survey.

Assessment of each student is completed as soon as possible after the student's initial enrollment but not later than twenty (20) school days after the student's enrollment.

If the assessment cannot be done within the time frame required, the parent must be provided notification of the reason for the delay.

Prospective kindergarten students may be assessed prior to enrollment during a kindergarten after May 1st of their Pre-K year.
