Problem: Nursing is an increasing complex profession regulated by laws and evaluated by national standards in health care and nursing. A recent national health standard and now a New Jersey state law, POLST, impacts nursing care. Post a clinical experience that you have had in which the patient had a POLST or did not have a POLST and in your opinion should have had one documented. Did the patient POLST include the three areas of care required by law? How was the nursing made aware of the POLST? If the patient did not have a POLST, was there any discussion of care? What is your role as a nurse in providing care of the patient with a POLST? How would you introduce the information to a patient who does not have a POLST? What would you do if you disagreed with the POLST?
