Problem
Harold Garfinkel's original ethnomethodological study included facing backwards on an elevator to gauge the reactions of onlookers. The breaching experiment was later repurposed on the television show Candid Camera for entertainment. And in this video, another television show, Would You Fall for That?, again recycles the breaching experiment for the purpose of entertainment but adds a new spin to the deviant act.
Watch the YouTube video "WYFFT: Would You Fall For That - Elevator", then answer the following questions.
a) Did any of the study subjects provide positive sanctions (that encourages behavior)? Did any of the study subjects provide negative sanctions (that discourages behavior)?
b) Did any of the study subjects pretend that the deviant behavior was normal? If so, why do you think some people act like deviant behavior is normal? Do you think people are more likely to give positive sanctions to an individual person being deviant or a group of people being deviant?
c) Do you think people are more likely to give negative sanctions to an individual person being deviant or a group of people being deviant? Why do you think this is so?
