Screening tools that can be used to affirm your initial diagnosis that a patient may meet the diagnostic criteria for a sleep disorder
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's sleep classification committee has identified five sleep disorder categories including:
- Insomnias- Disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep
- Sleep Apnea- Sleep-related breathing disorders
- Hypersomnias- Disorders of excessive somnolence
- Circadian Rythm Sleep Disorders- Disorders of the sleep-wake cycle
- Parasomnias- Dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals (Sleep Disorders (PDQ®)-Health Professional Version, 2019)
Approximately 10% of the adult population suffers from insomnia and another 20% experience at least occasional episodes of insomnia (Shinohara et al., 2023). In addition to information gathered during assessment, there are two screening tools commonly used for insomnia; the Athens Insomnia Scale (ASI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Polysomnography (PSG) is used to diagnose sleeping disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and sleep related hypoxia (Rundo & Downey, 2019).
