Development of the aprn role

Problem: The role of the APN is a relatively new one in the timeline of healthcare. As stated in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners: "The development of the APRN role, the nurse practitioner (NP), began in the mid- 20th century amid great opposition in an environment of informal training, with no credentialing processes, and an increasing sophistication of medical care. NPs began responding to these challenges and began defining and legitimizing the role in the 1970s" (Increasing Access to Health Care by Implementing a Consensus Model for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practice. 2018). Fast forward to today, and although a lot has changed, there remain barriers to the NP role. A lot of these barriers are deemed to be rooted in politics. Limitations are put on APRNs for various reasons but as noted by Hudpeth and Klein, "This is in part due to the perceived encroachment of NP SOP into the SOP of medicine that has existed for decades" (Hudspeth, Klein 2019).
