Steel Design
Building analysis and design.
Below pin jointed truss is part of a steel building. Your task is to complete the preliminary design of the frame. For preliminary design stage, it is accepted that the frame is detached from the remaining structure with given boundary conditions after load tributary and geometry repetition are considered.
1. a. Manually compute and construct the AFD. Use a FE software of your choice (Ansys, Strand7) to model the system, solve it using Linear Static Solver and produce AFD to confirm.
b. Instead of pin jointed condition, the frame is now semi rigid. In FE software, re-model the joint condition to reflect this scenario; solve it using Linear Static Solver. Obtain BMD, SFD and AFDs.
2. Develop Excel spread sheets to do strength design to give the sizes of the tension members, columns and the connections at A, B and C for the truss system. It is required that you use only OneSteel 300 Plus UB and UC sections.
3. Revise point 2 for member sizes with the self weight are now included. For simplification to maintain the pin-jointed condition, it is assumed that member self weight will act as equal point loads at member end joints.
