1. Working with local farmers to promote conservation and improve livelihoods. By working with local farmers to help the problem of deforestation in the Chiapas area of Mexico would allow for the company to buy more locally produced coffee at a premium price which would encourage farmers to grow more of the crop in the end.
2. Introducing a year-round product line to show Starbucks commitment agriculture and socioeconomic improvement. By being able to produce products year-round it would make the farmers feel more comfortable that they would receive a consistent income for growing their crops. This would help Starbucks to not only help the local farmers but also receive more local product.
3. Develop coffee-sourcing guidelines to incorporate sound environmental management. Since deforestation is an issue of concern in the area, considering that the crop is supposed to be shade-grown. So, by training local farmers new ways of growing organic crops they could ensure that the conservation of the land was of upmost importance to make sure that the farmers can continue to grow coffee plants for a long time.Providing a consistent product and income for local farmers.
4. Engage other leaders of the coffee industry in an effort to instill guidelines for environmental and social quality. By trying to get other coffee producers to adopt new guidelines would allow for more farmers to grow a quality product while still being able to conserve the forests of the land for other endangered species. It would also ensure that the growers of the crop would have a fair livelihood so they could earn an adequate income on their product that they are growing.
Diageo is an alcoholic beverage powerhouse that operates in countries across the globe, primarily in North America, Europe, and Africa. Sourcing locally is important to the company because of their strong beliefs of sustainability being of the utmost importance when it comes to their industry. The case study uses a quote from Diageo's CEO Paul Walsh that explains creating socio-economic development programs are key to helping them achieve their business goals. This means working with the countries they are doing business with and helping their suppliers produce more resources. Diageo acquired the Meta Abo Brewery in Ethiopia in 2012 and raised interest from the government to create a plan to help the barley industry in the country. The case study has a quote from Nick Blasquez, President of Diageo Africa, that talks about how the Prime Minister proposed the idea of "a big, well-run corporate entity providing regular demand for local grain; that benefits us, it benefits the government, and it benefits the local economy." CEO Paul Walsh signed a letter of intent to invest over $1 million in a project that will support the local sourcing of barley from thousands of small farmers for their newly acquired Meta Abo Brewery. This was under the G8's New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, something Diageo pledged to support.
