Problem: The cities and towns of medieval Europe are the scene of significant changes that will eventually transform human society into its present rapid pace, democratic politics, and commercial society. What were some of these changes in the towns of Italy, England, Germany and/or the Low Countries? To what degree did they develop relatively autonomous local economic and political structures?
