Project Description
Design, develop and document the process of creating clear and effective visual representations for a topic of your choice. You should create an interactive data visualization and/or a number of static data visualizations. The visualizations must be based on real data that you can acquire through a third-party publicly available data source.
Project Tasks
- Select a publicly available data set (that have not been used in the HDSDA course previously) - Prepare/preprocess data appropriately
- Design and create an interactive data visualization and/or static data visualizations o Use multiple visualizations techniques based on the objectives set for your project o Compare and constrast the different techniques applied
- Present the work carried out via a report and/or on-line
Process:
- Acquire and understand the dataset o Identify a dataset(s)
- Acquire access to dataset (Download or Cloud access)
- Inspect the data - Identify features of interest
Determine key objectives
o What do you wish to show with this project? - Identify key results in dataset
-Preprocess the data o Data cleansing
oStructure data to suit the representation method
- Create visual representations o Identify and implement several techniques
o Multiple variables (>2) to be identified
Project Deliverables
You are required to:
1. Create interactive data visualization and/or a number of static data visualizations of a chosen dataset
2. Write a report which includes and documents all the visual representations you created for thisproject. The report should include the following:
Short background on data source selected, including basic domain information
- Specification of what do you wish your project to show, i.e. what are the main objectives, what is the narrative conveyed?
- Outline the visual design process from beginning to end - analysis of data, data preprocessing, how you developed your data visualizations
- Justification of techniques, layout, style, and colour used for each visualisation
- Presentation and discussion of the results shown by each visualization
- Conclusions including findings/interpretations - a short reflection on developing this project e.g. what you found easy/difficult
