Problem
The flash floods in Kamwala South have taken their toll on the residents of the area. For many, the floods have caused damage to their homes and properties, making life even more challenging in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Impacts
A. Floods have damaged and destroyed structures (including houses, shops and roads) and crops, and increased the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery.
B. The city experiences perennial cholera cases and fatalities, particularly in un-serviced informal settlements which have poor living conditions and are prone to flooding.
C. It is the urban poor living in informal settlements who are most vulnerable to these impacts. Most unplanned settlements use pit latrines and shallow wells which can get contaminated when flooding occurs increasing the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery Requirement: You have just been awarded a contract as Main Consultant to advise DMMU on this particular national disaster.
