Develop a better multicultural understanding

Problem

Having client collaboration is crucial when conducting counselling from a culturally sensitive point of view. As you mentioned, individuals can have different perspectives on a similar culture based on their background, family system, or history with the culture. Thus, we need the client's voice to guide and educate us on how best to serve them.

We differ slightly in that, despite this, it is our job as professionals to educate ourselves before engaging with a client to be as prepared as possible. While the client can clarify small nuances, we should have a broad sense of the cultural norms to guide the conversation correctly.

Kennerley et al. (2017) list some instrumental techniques to gain cultural awareness. What techniques have you engaged in to develop a better multicultural understanding? How did they support your ability to work with that cultural group? In what ways did you still feel a lacking or a knowledge gap?
