"Detriment" as consideration
An example of a 'detriment' that will legally suffice like the consideration for a promise is provided with the case of Carlill v. Carbolic Smoke Ball Co. Whether Mrs Carlill acted upon the advertisement about buying and using the carbolic smoke balls as directed she put herself to a quantity of inconvenience at the advertising company's request. So hence the inconvenience she suffered through having to swallow so many balls to so many days was the 'detriment' that constituted the consideration such the defendant company's promise for pay the £100 reward.
