Problem Assignment - Ductility of Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls
1. Determine the minimum spacing of No. 4 reinforcing bars that can be placed in the special reinforced shear wall shown below per the TMS 402 "rho-max" limitations. The wall is subjected to a vertical axial compressive force equal to 100 kips which results from a combination of dead, live and earthquake loads (D+0.75L+0.525E).
Prism strength is equal to 1500 psi. Type S mortar is used with Portland Cement. Reinforcement is Grade 60.

2. If you wished to waive the "rho-max" limitations, what alternate wall design would you prescribe that would achieve the same or better ductility?
