Job Development Resources

Job development is certainly made easier by accessing information about our communities that has been accumulated by others. Work In Texas website And the local chamber of commerce are two of the most important.

Ultimately, however, most jobs are found through personal relationships or at least acquaintances, with business owners, managers and Human Resources employees. These acquaintances/relationships gather regularly in civic clubs, fraternal organizations and chamber meetings. Wherever employers gather is where you need to be as well, whether it is for marketing purposes or for seeking jobs. Employers will not come to us.

A JPS should train customers on performing job research and conducting a job search. The following handouts were provided in a previous unit, if you did not download them previously, please do so now. They will be needed to complete an upcoming assignment.

Use Texas Labor Market Information to locate employers for specific occupations.

Customer Scenario: Juan

Juan Martinez

Juan's hearing loss developed as a small child. After testing, it was determined that the cause was Congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV). At birth, he did not have any symptoms, but by the age of two, there was a noticeable delay in child development. Testing revealed the hearing loss and led the way to Juan receiving speech and hearing services. He is deaf.

The middle of five children in a working class household, Juan had to negotiate with his older and younger siblings to do the same things they did. His family is bilingual and his grandparents speak Spanish only. He learned to lip read both Spanish and English over time. Early on, his mother introduced American Sign Language into the language flow. Juan, one older brother and a younger sister both sign fluently. The two siblings frequently interpreted for Juan throughout his school career. He learned some speech, but it is very difficult to understand and sometimes more confusing than helpful. He compensated for his social skills through creatively writing small stories and drawing simple pictures for others. As a teenager, he picked up quickly on video and computer games. He would set up video/computer game tournaments at his home with his cousins.

Juan began working with his VR Counselor, while in high school at Mary Carroll High School. Juan graduated from High School in 2014 with a 3.25 GPA and was actively involved in journalism and photography clubs in his school. He continued his education at Texas A & M University in Corpus Christi, where he majored in computer science. He obtained a work-study job on the school paper as a copy editor during his junior and senior years. Additional financial assistance from TWC-VRS and his parents supported his school and living expenses. Juan finished an undergraduate degree in computer science in 2018 with a 3.6 GPA.

He is eager to start his career. His VR Counselor identified several areas where he could use assistance from an Employment Services Provider, including employment preparation, job search, application training, and suitable accommodations to participate in an active job search.
