Question: Meyer and Murrell (2014) conducted a program evaluation to determine if faculty participants in an online teaching professional development actually learned anything by participating in these training sessions. While this study focused on faculty specifically, professional development has been adopted across many different departments in higher education institutions. What is the role of professional development in higher education for both faculty and non-faculty? More importantly, why is it important that these developmental sessions be evaluated for their effectiveness?
