ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION:
"The Organisation Man" by William Whyte, published in 1956, gave an insight of US giant corporations like IBM, DuPont or Ford that dominated the American businesses during its heyday from 1950s to 1980s. IBM was a classic example. For many years its managers wore only dark blue suits, white shirts and dark ties, symbols of their lifetime allegiance to Big Blue.
The book described how America had turned into a nation of employees who "take the vows of organisation life". Foremost among the organisations were long service, obedience and loyalty. Organisation men were conforming, results focussed and objectives oriented. This contrast to today's trends of outsourcing, job hopping, casualisation of jobs e.t.c.
Required: Write an essay to address the following statement;
"Despite all the changes in the business environment, is the Organisation Man relevant in today's organisations?" Discuss.
