Power System Assignment:
The assessment for this course is to design a substation and the related protection system. The transformer is an existing 33 kV to 11 kV 5 MVA transformers, 3 phase/3 phase Transformer. The selection of transformer connection method, transformer protection and Cooling method is left up to the student. The selection of overhead or underground line feed, protection system, earthling, metering, insulators, security (physical) and related switchgear, and so on is left up to the student. A line flow diagram of the proposed substation Layout is expected as is the consideration of external events like lightning protection and so on.
Each student is expected to work alone and to produce a short, typed Engineering Report (Maximum 12 pages comprising cover page and appendices, summary, references, table of contents and so on). Detailing the design and justifying each decision.
Specific information which will be needed is as shown below:
A) Type of line – that is, type of poles, insulators, type of conductor and so on.
B) Ratings of the Transformer 33/11 kV (Z% = 20%).
C) Outgoing cable.
D) MVA Rating of the 11 kV breaker and fault current.
E) Protection requirements.
F) Earthing.
G) Safety needs.
