Assignment - Flow Chart

Students will develop a flow chat, which outlines the interconnections between the histories of early childhood education and the way early childhood education has evolved to current pedagogy and practice. Students will then elaborate on these points in essay style using at least 6 references to support their work.

Step 1

• Design a flow chart to provide a visual representation of the interconnections between the histories of ECEC and how it has evolved to current pedagogy and practice

o For example: historical perspectives; theoretical perspectives; legislation, regulation and policy; pedagogy and practice

• Use arrows to demonstrate how they interconnect

o See ‘Flow Chart Guide' located in Assignment 1 resources for guidance

Step 2

• Use the factors you identified in your flow chart as headings and write an essay detailing how each of these factors have influenced the way ECEC has evolved to current pedagogy and practice (300-400 words per factor)

o Discussion points may include:

- Historical perspectives
• Identify and discuss aspects of history that have influenced how we view children, how we teach children, teaching practices etc

- Theoretical perspectives
• Identify and discuss theories that have influenced how we view and teach children

- Legislation, regulation and policy
• Identify and discuss legistlation/regulations/policies that have influenced ECEC today; why were these put in place?

- Pedagogy and practice
• Identify and discuss ways of teaching children; consider the ECEC curriculum

• Your essay must provide an in depth analysis of how the ECEC field has evolved over time, drawing from relevant literature and readings from this unit (minimum of 6 references)

Step 3

• Combine your flow chart diagram with your essay (first page flow chart, remaining pages essay)

• Proof read you work, checking for grammatical and spelling errors

• Ensure you provide a reference list, and that you follow accurate and consistent use of Harvard Referencing
