Design a PV + Battery Energy Storage System for Residential Applications
Residential grid connection is at 240V single phase, 15A service
Typical residential load is 5kW
Required energy storage backup is for 1 hour for full load
Steps for Part A
Conduct a survey of commercially available solar panels...
Select a panel - give reasons for why you selected this particular panel...
Determine the number of required solar panels...
Conduct a survey of commercially available batteries...
Select a battery - give reasons for why selected this particular battery...
Determine the number of required batteries...
Conduct a survey of commercially available inverters...
Select an inverter - give reasons for why you selected this particular inverter...
Determine the voltage, current and power rating requirement of inverter...
Conduct a survey of commercially available battery chargers...
Select an inverter - give reasons for why you selected this particular battery charger...
Determine the voltage, current and power rating requirement of battery charger...
Add protection components...circuit breakers, fuses, disconnect switches as applicable...
Develop a complete system diagram with cables, interconnections etc...
Steps for Part B
Draw electrical circuit diagram of major power components, i.e. solar panels, inverter, batteries, battery charger, grid (ac voltage source), household loads (resistance + inductance) from the system sized in Part A
Describe control algorithms for inverter, battery charger, supervisory control
Model the electrical components using SimPowerSystems in Matlab Simulink
Model the control components and logic in Matlab Simulink
Run simulations and demonstrate following conditions:
Grid ON, sunny day, solar panels synthesizing > 5kW thus supporting all household loads and are charging the batteries, any additional power fed back to the grid
Grid ON, cloudy day, solar panels synthesizing < 5 kW thus supporting only partial loads, remaining required power drawn from the grid
Grid OFF, cloudy day, solar panels synthesizing < 5kW thus supporting only partial loads, remaining power drawn from the battery
