Initial post - Healthcare is the one profession where the patient is the main source of reasoning behind every action that is taken in the field. Ethics and ethical behavior are the basis behind every action that is taken within this field. Patients privacy and care are involved with each action taken and ethical behavior is a determinate behind every step for actions taken.
Ethics and ethical behavior can simply be defined as the character of an individual. In healthcare, having character determines the treatment of patients and how healthcare professionals conduct themselves within their given profession. For example, HIPAA is an act that regulates the privacy and treatment of patients and healthcare professionals. This act plays a major role in every ethical action that takes place within the healthcare field. "In passing the law for HIPAA, Congress required the establishment of Federal standards to guarantee electronic protected health information security to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability of health information that ensure the protection of individual's health information while also granting access for health care providers, clearinghouses, and health plans for continued medical care. [6][7][8][9][10]" (Edemekong et al, 2022).
A particular subset of healthcare professionals that deal with ethical decisions on regular basis are nurses. Nurses, although not as educated and authoritative as doctors, see patients and make more decisions with patients generally. Nursing ethics is started in the late 19th century and has been expanded upon since the very start (Haddad et al, 2023). Nurses must practice ethical behavior continually as it affects each patient and the significance because it helps them make practical decisions that can help the organization they work for and their patients privacy and health.
