1) Continuum of Deviant Social Structures Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to:
i) Analyze social phenomena utilizing theoretical frameworks
ii) Recognize ethical problems faced by individuals or communities and classify effective solutions
iii) Describe the concept of social deviance and provide examples of deviant behavior in social context.
iv) Describe and critically estimate contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice.
For this project, use Best and Luckenbill’s continuum of deviant organizations to describe how a person or group could become increasingly invested in his/her deviance. For instance, let how a youth from gang-impacted area could move his/her way throughout from less organized to more organized deviant social organizations, and imagine how this would finally impact his/her identity formation. Explain how these different levels of social structure could impact one’s commitment to deviant identity. Select a deviant behaviour, either from real life or from media, and follow this continuum through with your suitable example.
This project must be 750-1000 words in length and must draw on readings from this module and the discussions in this module.
