Describe what radiometric dating is really describing

Problem 1) One discussion topic/question I'd like you to consider is to imagine an easy way to describe what radiometric dating is really describing?  How could you describe the concept is less scientific terms to a friend or family member?  Please describe an analogy (in detail, and creative/interesting as you can) that would summarize radiometric dating or decay to someone who doesn't know what radiometric dating is.

Problem 2) What is the benefit of using Carbon dating for a sample, rather than dating using some other periodic table elements on Earth, under radiometric decay?

In other words, what is the difference in how useful it is to conduct radiometric dating between with different elements of the periodic table? Why does it even matter what element you are using to determine the age of a rock, fossil, or other sample?
