Reply to discussion post I had not thought about the relationship of rurality and rates of ADHD. In thinking about the health disparities that exist in rural areas, it makes sense that there would be higher rates of the disorder and barriers to adequate treatment. ADHD has a genetic component as well as physiological and psychological. ADHD presents differently depending on gender, age, and subtype. In rural communities, misconceptions may exist about what ADHD is and its associated symptoms. The limited resources may limit early identification, assessment, and treatment options. Among adults, stigma may prevent someone from seeking medication for fear of being labeled. The research investigating ADHD in adults is limited and much of the misperceptions arise from the stereotypical understanding of ADHD. Public perceptions of someone with ADHD tends to be more negative in that they believe the individual is not as smart or unable to perform at a high level, which is actually the opposite (Godfrey et. al., 2021). Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) also impact the rates of ADHD. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD had a higher ACE score than those that did not have ADHD. Children experiencing low economic status, family mental illness, violence, and parental incarceration had higher rates of ADHD (Brown et al., 2017).
