Be Able to Explain:
A. Describe the differences of approach to colonial rule between (a) the British Empire and (b) the French, Belgians, and Portuguese. For full credit you will need to know how issues like indirect rule, environment/geography, and indigénat status shaped African experiences of colonial rule.
B. Excluding ideas like "primordial tribalism," list and discuss the significance of at least two reasons for conflict following decolonization/the formation of independent African states in the post-colonial era.
C. Define the difference between the primordialist and circumstantialist models in terms of how they explain the formation of ethnic group political and social affiliations. Use either [or both] of these models to explain the ethnic conflict/divide found in our Nigeria case study.
D. Describe the purpose of the African Union (AU) and then list and briefly discuss at least two of the positive changes (e.g., APRM, AFS, and CEWS) that have resulted from its efforts.
E. Structural Adjustment Programs have been problematic for many African nations since the 1970s. Define what SAPs are and discuss a couple of major problematic impacts they have had on countries like Malawi (Patten reading/Lecture slide) and Zambia (Viewing Wkst/Handout).
