Problem: J.M. is a 20-year-old African American male who is coming to you due to his parent's constant push to see a therapist because they believe he is "too preoccupied with [his] appearance." J.M. reported that he values his appearance, but believes he is "ugly and hideous." When asked when these feelings began, J.M. reported that at age 14 he began to become excessively preoccupied with his "asymmetrical eyes, thinning hair, bumpy skin, and frail body." He also reported that he believes other people often talk about him and make fun of him due to his appearance. When asked about his day-to-day activities, J.M. reported that he spends approximately 3-5 hours a day checking his "flaws" in a mirror, window, or any other reflective surface. He also reported that he engages in activities such as pinning one eye to "make them more symmetrical" and comparing his appearance to individuals he sees on Instagram.
