The paper is to introduce you to the basic operations of the short term, acute care hospital or hospital organization. The paper will probably be around 10 double-spaced typewritten pages. Use APA style. You must Cite other's work and prove assertions.
Step one: Read the information and readings on organizational structure and how that relates to other organizational variables such as environmental forces, communication, people etc. Watch the videos supplied particularly the video of the instructor discussing the interplay of organizational variables.
Step two: Select a hospital or other instructor-approved large HC organization. Work with others in the class who work in hospitals or other large organizations such as Kelsey-Seybold. Clinics, physician practices, medical schools, and other smaller organizations will not be appropriate for this analysis and paper.
Step three: Describe the hospital (much of this can be found on its Web site).
1. Size. type, ownership. and control of the hospital.
2. Brief history.
3. Current level and scope of activity, e.g., census, LOS, current foci or initiatives.
4. If part of a system, describe how the hospital relates toStep four: Describe the hospital's organization, culture, and structure.
1. Provide an organization chart and a narrative explaining how the parts inter-relate and what type of structure.
Step five: Interview some employees. Using the Analysis of Organization worksheet, assess the organization's technology, people, communication, culture, environment, etc. Use this information to write the main section of the paper discussing how the variables interact in the organization and whether they do that successfully or unsuccessfully.
Step six: Finalize the paper with a summary of the leadership and culture you found in the organization. Give a brief synopsis of what you might change or do differently if you became COO of the hospital, and say why.
Notes on process:
1. You must, of course, visit your hospital and observe/talk to people.
2. You must interview at least three persons each closely related to what you are studying.
