Homework 1: Healthcare Information Management: Past, Present, and Future
Introduction:
Healthcare information systems are currently an integral component in providing healthcare services that ensure care continuum, quality provision of care, and desired patient and financial outcomes. In order to move with the current demands in healthcare information, we must learn from the past, analyze the current healthcare information needs and availability, and make sense on how we can do it better in the future.
Tasks:
1. Describe the history of healthcare information systems.
2. Identify and analyze at least five driving forces in the emergence and adoption of HIT.
3. Identify at least three most common healthcare information system applications that are integral to the operation of any healthcare organization.
4. Conduct a Strength Weakness Opportunity and Threats (SWOT) analysis of the current state of HIT. 4 to 6 pages.
Homework 2
Major health information technology (HIT) regulations aim to ensure privacy and confidentiality of patient health information. In this homework, you will be asked to research your state privacy laws and standards specific to patient health information.
Tasks:
1) Describe and discuss your state's privacy laws that are specific to HIT.
2) Compare and contrast your state's privacy laws against HIPAA privacy rules.
3) Develop and present a one- or two-page sample policy in ensuring privacy and confidentiality of patient health information when adopting an HIT. Your policy must cover:
a. Boundaries or limitations of disclosure
b. Security
c. Consumer control
d. Accountability

Homework 3: Administrative and Financial System Application
Introduction:
Healthcare managers and administrators are exposed to both clinical and business processes. It is almost impossible to achieve competency in business structures and processes, especially if one does not have the clinical background or have limited experience and knowledge of interdepartmental processes as well as external influences such as regulations, standards, etc. An administrative or management system would be most helpful to navigate a complex hospital or integrated healthcare system.
Tasks:
1) Describe and discuss management/administrative and financial system applications.
2) Discuss potential costs of an IT system adoption of administrative/management systems.
3) Provide an example of analytics for administrative/management applications.
4) Identify and discuss the trends, barriers, and challenges in adopting an administrative/management application.
Your homework should be addressed in a 4 to 6 pages document.

Homework 4: HIT Governance
Introduction:
The current literature is replete with information on the value of information technology in healthcare. As the industry further seeks achievement of safe quality care, cost control, access, HIT enhancement or new projects must be aligned with organizational strategic planning and demand of external environment. HIT governance has an important role in addressing alignment between strategic IT, organizational strategic planning, and the external environments.
Tasks:
1) Develop ten questions that will evaluate the alignment of IT projects with organizational strategic planning and external environment. Explain the intent of each question for evaluating HIT alignment with strategic planning and external environment.
2) Interview a senior healthcare leader of a local healthcare facility and ask about his or her IT governance and his or her roles and responsibilities and effectiveness.
3) Finally, ask the senior healthcare leader using the ten questions that you developed and evaluate his or her HIT alignment. Also, evaluate his or her responses if there is an alignment with HIT strategies, strategic planning, and external environment. 4-6 pages.
The following resources are provided for this project:
From your course textbook, Information Systems for Healthcare Management, review the following chapter:

Homework 5: HIT Governance and Decision Rights
Introduction:
The complexities in healthcare clinical and business processes drives disruptive innovations in HIT. Sense making of healthcare leaders and managers may not be as sensitive compared to those who are knowledgeable and dedicated to the science, art, and drivers of HIT innovations. To achieve critical measures of cost and organizational efficiency, HIT governance, according to Glandon, Smaltz, & Slovensky (2013), allows for timely and accurate business decisions.
Tasks:
1) Review the current literature in HIT strategic planning and HIT governance.
2) Compare and contrast HIT strategic planning and HIT governance.
3) Identify processes/framework involved in HIT strategic planning and HIT governance.
4) Identify and explore theoretical framework in HIT strategic planning and HIT governance.
5) Evaluate the importance of HIT strategic planning and HIT governance in HIT acquisition and/or upgrade. 4-6 pages
