Problem
Philip G. Zimbardo influential social psychologist who is best know for his research study "Stanford Prison Experiment." The study goals was to test the earlier work done by Stanley Milgram " Obedience to Authority in 1960's." In the example performed by Zimbardo research participants were assigned roles of "prisoners and guards" in a mock prison environment constructed in the basement at Stanford University. Zimbardo's prison study revealed how situational forces influences human behavior causing them to conform to the authority. Think about the psychological consequences of being confined to a jail cell and having no outside contact with other humans and limited sensory stimulation.
Discuss and describe the ethical Issues that impacted the study. If you were the researcher conducting this study would you have completed the study given the situation in the mock prison. Or would you have terminated the study just as Zimbardo did due ethical concerns and criticism? Can you think of any situations today where humans held captive in a prison environment had similar experiences with authoritarian powers?
