Problem
Reflect:
As human beings we all have biases that affect our perceptions and ideas. According to von Winckelmann and Garcia (2021), "a bias is a tendency to view something in a particular way" (p. 52). Take some time and reflect on your own biases. Do you have a favorite restaurant, sports team, author, or information source? How does that affect your perception of them and the conclusions you draw? In this discussion you will reflect on confirmation bias and explore its impact on the research process.
Write:
i. Demonstrated confirmation bias. Describe a situation in which you or someone you know has demonstrated confirmation bias.
ii. Your own biases. Share how your own biases might have impacted the sources you chose for your topic.
iii. Steps to minimize bias. Discuss two steps based on the assigned reading and video that could minimize the effect of bias in the situation you described.
iv. Explain why confirmation bias matters. Explain why it is important for scholars to be aware of confirmation bias during the research process. Include how this awareness is important to you as you seek information for your own research.
