Describe rise of banditry in the american southwest

Assignment task:

The rise of banditry in the American Southwest in the late nineteenth century has been viewed through two lenses - for Anglo-Americans, Mexican bandits were seen as criminals that needed to be apprehended and summarily tried.  For Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, they became symbols of resistance and folk heroes.  What side do you think they fall on and why?  Be specific in your reasoning and cite evidence from the Vargas text in support.

This is the Textbook (Crucible of Struggle: A History of Mexican Americans from Colonial Times to the Present Era by Zaragosa Vargas)
