Describe psychological inhibitions to critical thinking

Problem: The arguments against Socrates are shown to be futile and superficial. Most of the artists, thinkers, and leaders that we study in this and other classes rebel against the institutions and power structures of their time and are subsequently condemned, crucified or socially ostracized. Why are the heroes of humanity -- Socrates, Rumi, Malcolm X, etc. -- often placed in opposition against those who have political and social power? In other words, what is the relationship between psychological inhibitions to critical thinking and thinking of yourself as richer, smarter, or in some way better than others?
