A researcher has discovered a bacterium that has recently become resistant to a new antibiotic that was developed. To try and determine how the bacterium became resistant, she conducts a series of experiments and obtains the results. After analyzing her results, she believe she now knows what is causing the resistance observed in the bacterium she is studying.
i. Describe one potential result that the researcher could have obtained that could explain how the bacterium became resistant to the antibiotic (root cause).
ii. Explain in as much detail as you can one potential mechanism that this bacterium might be using to "fend" off the antibiotic once the bacterium becomes exposed to it. (ie, Specifically how the bacteria is preventing the antibiotic from destroying it).
