Assignment:
A researched reflection paper combines an experience and research into a topic. Hopefully something during the fieldtrip has sparked some curiosity about a particular aspect of the trip. Use that spark to ignite some passion for your writing topic. According to the North CarolinaState Service-Learning Program (Reflection and Articulating Learning, FacultyCenter for Teaching and Learning. NC State, 2004) "the best reflection follows a simple three step model:
(1) describe the experience(s) objectively,
(2) analyze the experience(s) in terms of the categories of service-learning objectives (personal, civic, academic), and
(3) articulate (express) the learning that results.

Your work should be your work. Do not quote sources, read the source and rewrite the information in your own words, then cite. If you are found to plagiarize, expect a punishment ranging from a hefty deduction to failing the course or being removed from the school. Please do not plagiarize, even accidently. When in doubt, cite, or ask me.Use databases to find background information on your paper's topic to help explain your views or comments. Below, I have a few writing prompts.
Biome assessment:
THE GOAL- Reflect on your teams strategy of assessing the health of a biome and explain your reasoning for doing so. Use research to put the health of the biome in context and find facts to help establish a health baseline. Use some of the questions below to help guide your paper.
How did you assess the biome? What did you find? How is what you found relevant? What should you have found (based on the research)? How might you improve your experiment if you were to repeat it? What sort of biome were you looking at? What aspects were you looking at and why were they important? How might have other environmental factors influenced your assessment (night, was it raining, did it rain, wind, tide, ect, warming or cooling trends)?
Waste Water facility:
THE GOAL- Reflect on the time we spent at his facility and elaborate on the important aspects you learned. Use researched facts to help outline how water moves thought the facility and where it ends up. Also, investigate (more research) some of the important environmental consequences of our current water treatment model. Use some of the questions below to help guide your paper.
How does the facility work? How might it be improved? What aspect did you find fascinating (engineering, microbiology, scale, environmental impact)? How would a facility like this change the environment (the bay, water, air, and soil quality)? How might a tour like this change your behavior?
Recycling Facility:
THE GOAL- Reflect on some of the things you have learned at the recycling plant. In your paper describe how out solid waste moves though the system, how it is sorted, and what happens to it. Use researched sources to find facts about current recycling trends. You can think globally, nationally, or drill down to just facts about our local environment. You should also describe some of the things that you learned that might have surprised you or that you didn't know before you took the tour. Use your research skills to find out if those surprising facts are unique or standard practice at other recycling plants. Use some of the questions below to help guide your paper.
How does the facility work? How might it be improved? What aspect did you find fascinating (engineering, scale, environmental impact)? How would a facility like this change the environment (the bay, water, air, and soil quality)? How might a tour like this change your behavior? How would you help increase recycling awareness in your neighborhood, city, or school?
