Problem: You have a young autistic client who has been riding with your equine-assisted therapy program. He has a tendency to jump off the horse without warning ("bail"), which is a serious safety risk. You have managed to pair him with a horse who is very patient and tolerant, and engaging. This horse is one of the favorites in your program. The client has connected with the horse, and you notice that his behavior has improved dramatically when he's on this horse, but that if he is on one of the other horses he still tends to "bail" out. He comes to the program one day when a substitute therapeutic riding instructor has already worked with the horse for 2 lessons just before yours, and the horse seems tired and reluctant to participate. What are your ethical considerations? What are your possible options (you can think out of the box...)? What do you decide to do and why?
